Products from IKAROS / Hansson PyroTech
Hansson PyroTech was founded in 1888 by Carl Robert Hansson in Gothenburg. The company initially manufactured fireworks and began producing distress signals for ships in the 1890s. By the early 1920s, its product range included parachute flares, blue and red signal lights, signal pistols and lifebuoy lights.
In 1959, Hansson PyroTech introduced the IKAROS signal rocket, designed as a hand-launched distress rocket. Its design and rocket technology formed the basis for the subsequent naming of the IKAROS brand and product family.
The Sweden-based company manufactures and distributes pyrotechnic distress signals for commercial and recreational boating under the IKAROS brand. The range comprises the full spectrum of pyrotechnic signalling devices in accordance with SOLAS and is available through an international network of distributors and retailers.

The IKAROS line throwing device is used to make line connections in maritime emergencies and accidents as well as in overhead line and bridge construction. It is used between ships, from shore to ship or from ship to shore as well as for rescuing people.The robust device consists of a compact, waterproof plastic container with integrated handle and release mechanism, a rocket and 300 meters of high-strength line (4 mm polypropylene, tensile strength 2 kN).The pistol grip allows safe one-handed operation of the single-shot device (see explanatory video). In calm weather, the line can be shot up to 300 m away. The line floating head made of orange plastic ensures that the line is easy to find in the water.The rocket can be replaced (see explanatory video).The line launcher complies with the latest SOLAS 74/96 regulations and is approved worldwide (MED, MER, TC, USCG) (see "Downloads"). The IKAROS MOB MKIV light and smoke signal for “man overboard” emergencies is designed for vertical mounting on the bridge. Ideally, one MOB signal should be mounted on each of the port and starboard sides, connected to a lifebuoy or rescue buoy. If the lifebuoy or rescue buoy is thrown overboard, the light/smoke signal is pulled along with it.If mounted at a height of less than five meters above the water, it is recommended to stow the MOB signal indoors and throw it into the water individually as needed.As soon as the signal is released from its mount, it automatically begins emitting light and smoke to mark the position of the person in the water.The MOB light and smoke signal is powered by a lithium battery and can be used as a day and night marker.
