AIS transponder & receiver
AIS stands for "Automatic Identification System" - the marine tracking system is intended to identify vessels and to track and monitor vessel movements. The participants send out ship data like ship name, ship type, call sign and MMSI number (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) at certain intervals. Based on the MMSI number a vessel can be called directly via VHF marine radio. This is useful, for example, if evasive action needs to be communicated.
