The purpose of a whipping is to prevent the end of a rope from fraying. There are several modern methods to set up a whipping, such as shrink whippings or liquid whippings. For the traditionally proven method of a common or stitched whipping, good whipping twine is required. It can also be used for sewing or repairing sails.
