Work lifejackets are intended for people who regularly work on or beside the water and need freedom of movement while doing so. In commercial, inland and seagoing shipping, automatic inflatable lifejackets are commonly used for this purpose. Depending on the model, they fall into the 150 or 275 Newton buoyancy class. Within the TOPLICHT range, 150 N versions are intended for work in light or normal clothing, while 275 N models provide more buoyancy and are also used with heavy workwear, foul-weather clothing or thermal protective clothing.
For day-to-day work, buoyancy is only one consideration. Cut, harness arrangement and protective cover also affect how a lifejacket can be worn. Low-profile folded buoyancy chambers and adjustable straps make longer periods of wear easier. For work involving mechanical or thermal exposure, versions with suitable protective covers are available, including for welding, cutting and grinding. Other models are designed for use with fall-arrest systems, breathing apparatus or helmets.
