Exide Technologies was founded in 1888 by W.W. Gibbs in the United States under the name Electric Storage Battery Company. The company developed into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of lead-acid batteries. In the 1990s, Exide acquired several European battery manufacturers, including the well-known German brands DETA, Sonnenschein, and Hagen. In Germany, Exide operates production sites in Büdingen (Hesse) and Bad Lauterberg (Harz).

The Exide product portfolio includes battery solutions for various applications. These include starter and supply batteries for vehicles such as passenger cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, as well as marine and leisure vehicles. Exide also offers energy storage solutions for industrial applications such as telecommunications, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), renewable energy, and other critical systems. The company also develops customized energy storage systems based on innovative lithium-ion technology.
