This very fast-drying universal corrosion protection epoxy primer is "One for Everything": An exceptionally robust and waterproof 2-component sealant for use in underwater and above-water areas.
PPG SIGMAPRIME 200 has excellent corrosion protection properties, as well as high surface and temperature tolerance. It adheres to hand-derusted as well as water-blasted surfaces, just as well as to aluminum and hot-dip galvanized surfaces.
Processing instructions: For sufficient corrosion protection in underwater areas, we recommend a dry film thickness of at least 200 μm; with roller application, this corresponds to approx. 4 coats. SIGMAPRIME 200 can be overcoated with all marine 1- and 2-component primers, paints and varnishes. Before painting with antifouling, an adhesion promoter (tiecoat) is required. For repairs and smaller boats, SIGMA VIKOTE 18 is used for this. For large-area coatings, SIGMACOVER 555 is recommended (available in 20 l containers on request).
Tip: The adhesion promoter (VIKOTE 18, SIGMACOVER 555) can be painted directly onto SIGMAPRIME 200 without sanding if the surface has not yet fully cured, i.e. is "tacky". Otherwise, intermediate sanding is necessary.
Technical data
- Substrates: steel, galvanized steel, shop primer, coated metals
- Pretreatment:
- Steel: blasting according to ISO-Sa2½ or mechanical cleaning (SPSS-Pt3), blast profile 30–75 µm
- Shop primer: leave intact or, if damaged, also blast
- Galvanized steel: degrease, roughen with sandpaper or sweep blasting
- Old coatings: high-pressure cleaning, dry, clean, free of dust and grease
- Subsequent coat: 2-component and 1-component primers (e.g. SIGMACOVER 555, SIGMADUR, VIKOTE 18)
- Coverage: approx. 6 m²/l at 100 µm (spray application), approx. 12 m²/l at 50 µm (manual roller application)
- Thinner: THINNER 91-92 (brush/roller: up to 5 %, spraying: 0–15 %)
- Application method: brush, roller, airless or air spraying
- Mixing ratio: 4:1 (base:hardener by volume)
- Pot life at 10°C: 7 hours
- Drying times at a DFT of up to 160 µm at 10 °C: touch-dry after 3 hours, dry for further processing after 8 hours, fully cured after 14 days
- Shelf life: at least 24 months when stored cool and dry
