Description

HEMPEL CONVERSION Primer is a two-component epoxy resin-based adhesion primer. It was developed to facilitate the change from conventional antifoulings to the biocide-free thin-film antifouling HEMPASPEED TF from HEMPEL. The primer can be applied to existing antifoulings (including International VC-17m) as well as to one- and two-component primers, provided the surface is intact and stable. Caution: The primer does NOT provide corrosion protection, but merely acts as an adhesion promoter. Prime uncoated surfaces with a corrosion protection primer beforehand. Two-component primers based on epoxy resin (e.g. HEMPEL Light Primer) are recommended. 

Technical Data

  • Substrate: Existing antifouling in good condition (not suitable for bare surfaces)
  • Surface preparation:
    • Wet sand old antifouling with water and waterproof paper
    • Rinse with fresh water, clean and allow to dry
    • Surface must be clean, dry and free of grease
  • Topcoat: HEMPEL's Silic One Tiecoat, Hempaspeed TF
  • Coverage: approx. 15 m²/l at 25 µm dry film thickness
  • Thinner: Do not thin
  • Application method: Brush, roller 
  • Mixing ratio: 3:1 (Base:Hardener by volume)
  • Pot life: 8 hrs at 20 °C
  • Drying times at 20 °C: Dust dry after 1¼ hrs; recoatable after 2 hrs (Silic One Tiecoat), 30 min (Hempaspeed TF); fully cured after 7 days

HEMPEL HEMPASPEED TF Thin-Film Bottom Coating
HEMPEL'S Hempaspeed TF is a hard, biocide-free thin-layer coating for all sports boats with GRP, steel or aluminum hulls, including regatta and trailer boats. Thanks to the special hydrogel technology, it forms an ultra-smooth surface that minimizes fouling and also reduces friction. Suitable for fresh, salt and brackish water as well as inland areas. Particularly recommended in areas where the use of biocides is prohibited or restricted (also in the Netherlands). Application on existing antifouling layer: It is possible to switch from a conventional antifouling to Hempaspeed TF. The old coating (if still intact) does not need to be removed. A coat of HEMPEL Conversion Primer should be applied as an adhesion primer, followed by two coats of Hempaspeed TF.Application as a new coating: When applying a new coating, the substrate must first be sealed with HEMPEL Light Primer before applying HEMPEL Conversion Primer and two coats of Hempaspeed TF.Note: The effectiveness of biocide-free underwater coatings depends on the area of operation and the boat's sailing characteristics. Regular inspection of the hull during the season is recommended. HEMPEL LIGHT PRIMER
HEMPEL LIGHT PRIMER is a high-quality 2-component epoxy primer for applications below and above the water. It can be used on rigid substrates as a barrier against penetrating water vapor, on GRP for osmosis prevention and repair, and on metal surfaces as corrosion protection. It can also be used on plywood and hardwood.
