Pumps perform a wide range of duties on board, including removing bilge and grey water, supplying deck-wash systems, circulating heating and cooling water, and transferring ballast, fuel or other liquids. The appropriate pump type depends on the medium, required flow rate and head, suction lift, connection size and available onboard voltage. Whether the pump needs to be self-priming or capable of handling solids is another important selection criterion.

Depending on their design, self-priming diaphragm pumps can handle bilge, drainage and grey water as well as sewage. Impeller pumps are used for fresh, sea and bilge water and are available as electrically driven, portable or belt-driven units with mechanical or electric clutch engagement. The latter can be used, among other purposes, as emergency bilge or deck-wash pumps. Centrifugal pumps are suitable for circulation in heating and cooling systems or for ballast duties; as they are not self-priming, a reliable supply to the pump must be ensured.
