The quick-release hook is inserted into the lashing loop (see video) and allows the webbing strap that secures the island in its holder to be pulled through tightly. In an emergency, the hook can be released quickly by hand so that the life raft can be thrown into the water. To do this, the safety split pin is pulled out, which can be done with one hand even with a heavy lashing load. If the liferaft can no longer be released manually before the ship sinks, the hydrostatic release unit (HRU) takes over. At a water depth of 1.5 - 4 metres, a spring-loaded blade automatically cuts through the lashing of the liferaft, which then slips out of the manual release hook.
