Description

As a 17-year-old, Veronica Skotnes signed on as a crew member on a schooner on the North Sea. Born in Norway in 1998, she remained faithful to sailing, completed her bachelor's degree in Arctic outdoor activities and sells Norwegian sweaters that she knits herself.

In her mid-twenties, she set off in her ketch (built in 1982) to explore the Arctic Circle region for three years. In "Beyond the winter sun. Life and Sailing in the Arctic Ocean", she describes her experiences on the coast of Finnmark, northern Norway: her search for tranquillity as well as liveliness. The challenges and dangers of being a liveaboard in this demanding area.

The result is a poetic homage to the Nordic nature with all its facets and an interesting insight into the history of Finnmark and its inhabitants. Time and again, Skotnes sought contact with the people who live on this remote coast. Soon her reputation preceded her from port to port: here comes a young woman who is interested in the history(ies) of the region.

She describes them just as sensitively and comprehensibly as her own thoughts and reflections. The book is illustrated with 18 drawings by Veronica Skotnes, which express the wildness and loneliness of the Arctic Ocean.

An extraordinary book - far removed from the typical sailing experience report. You can find a sample under "Downloads".

208 pages, 18 drawings by the author, three photos, format 15 x 22.5 cm, hardcover with dust jacket and ribbon marker. German edition.

From September 2025 to August 2026, Veronica Skotnes lives offline with filmmaker Alizé Jireh (www.womenandthewind.com) in a remote Norwegian lighthouse. So we can look forward to the publication of another strong book and great movie.
