Our traditional organic fibre ropes are environmentally friendly products of nature made of renewable resources. The yarns are made from hemp fibres (cannabis) or Manila hemp (abaca). Hemp is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. The hemp fibres are extracted from the stems of the commercial hemp plants and processed into yarns and finally into ropes. Among natural fibre ropes, hemp ropes have the highest breaking load. Also, they are abrasion resistant and fit the hand nicely. Contrary to its name, Manila hemp does not belong to the hemp plants. It is a fibre plant from the family of banana plants native to East Asia. The name Manila hemp refers to the capital of the Philippines being the traditionally most important place of export. In further processing, the raw material was mainly used to make ship hawsers. Manila ropes are considered light, smooth and resistant to saltwater. Compared to synthetic fibre ropes, both types of rope are susceptible to weathering. For this reason, they are mostly used indoors.
